John Laing

John is a solicitor and notary public. His main area of practice is child and family law. He joined Thorley Stephenson as a legal assistant in 2007 until 2008 when he attended the University of Edinburgh to study law. John graduated with a honours degree in law in 2012 and completed the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice in 2013. John then re-joined Thorley Stephenson as a trainee solicitor in 2015. He qualified as a solicitor in 2017.

John has acted for parents, children, grandparents and other family members. He has acted for vulnerable children where a referral has been made to the firm under the children’s duty scheme of the Scottish Legal Aid Board.

He is regularly instructed in children’s referrals proceedings and has experience in complex cases including those involving allegations of ‘shaken baby syndrome’ and non-accidental injuries of children. He has experience of taking evidence from vulnerable witnesses including children and victims of domestic abuse.

He has acted in permanence and adoption proceedings for parents, step-parents and adoptive parents. His experience in family disputes includes cases concerning contact, residence, relocation of children, child abduction, passports  and parental responsibilities and rights. He also has experience in financial provision on divorce and cohabitation. He has obtained a range of protective orders for vulnerable persons including victims of domestic abuse. He has acted for children for whom applications have been made to court for recovering of their personal information.

John regularly appears in Sheriff Courts throughout Scotland where he has conducted debates, proofs and appeals. He has appeared in the Sheriff Appeal Court and the All Scotland Sheriff Personal Injury Court. He has conducted several multiple day proofs including cases where he appeared against counsel. He has instructed counsel in cases involving complex issues of fact and law in the Sheriff Court and the Court of Session. In 2019 he acted for a person in a case before the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom. 

John is a volunteer with the Scottish Child Law Centre. He recently obtained a professional qualification from a course on the article 8 right to respect for private and family life.
