Alex Salmond charged with nine counts of sexual assault

Former Scottish first minister Alex Salmond has appeared at court after he was arrested and charged by the police for attempted rape and sexual assault. Salmond faces 14 charges – two counts of attempted rape, nine counts of sexual assault, two of indecent assault, and one of breach of the peace.

Arriving at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Thursday afternoon, Salmond made no plea and was released on bail. Outside the court, Salmond stated:

“I refute absolutely these allegations of criminality, and I’ll defence myself to the utmost in court.”

Police Scotland began investigating 64-year-old Salmond after the Scottish government looked into complaints made by two women who accused him of sexual harassment several years ago. In an interview last year concerning the sexual harassment claims, Salmond was reported saying:

“I have made many mistakes in my life, political and personal, but I have not sexually harassed anyone and I certainly have not been engaged in criminality.”

The recent criminal charges came about just two weeks after the Scottish government conceded defeat in a judicial review of its complaints process brought about by the ex-SNP leader. Salmond went on to win the legal dispute with the Scottish government over its investigation, forcing the government to admit they had violated guidelines by assigning an investigating officer who had previously been involved in the complaints process which could have created potential bias.

A special Holyrood committee – comprising of nine MSPs– has now been set up to look into how the Scottish government handled the complaints against the former first minister following the governments’ acceptance that the process had been unlawful. This inquiry into the government processes is entirely separate from the 14 charges currently against Salmond and is unlikely to start until the criminal case against Salmond has concluded.
